Sandbags for Temporary Ground Stabilization & Flood Defences

Sandbags are essential equipment for contractors and landscapers working on temporary soil stabilization, flood defenses, or erosion control. Our sandbags are available in two materials: biodegradable jute and UV-stable woven polypropylene. Both models measure 38x58 cm with a 15-liter capacity and are equipped with a drawstring for efficient closure. The jute version is ideal for projects where environmental friendliness is a priority, while the PP version is suitable for long-term outdoor exposure thanks to UV stabilization.

For professional applications, sandbags offer a cost-effective solution for temporary ground reinforcement. The jute sandbags are 100% biodegradable and break down naturally after the project without harming the environment. The polypropylene version weighs 50 grams per bag and is made of circular woven PP fabric with a top and bottom seam for maximum strength. The milky white color of the PP version indicates the UV-stable material, which can withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight and weather conditions.

Material selection & Project suitability

The choice between jute and polypropylene sandbags depends on the project duration and environmental requirements. Jute sandbags are ideal for seasonal projects such as temporary flood barriers during rainy seasons or soil stabilization in landscaping, where the material can be removed or left to decompose naturally afterward. The natural material is strong enough for short- to medium-term projects and is fully compostable. PP sandbags are suitable for longer-term projects, situations with intense UV exposure, or when reuse is required. The woven polypropylene with a top and bottom seam offers superior tear resistance and can be reused multiple times.

Graduated prices & delivery times

For professional projects, we offer competitive prices on sandbags. The jute version is available in packs of 20, while the PP version is also available in packs of 20. For large projects requiring several hundred sandbags, please contact us for volume pricing and project quotes. Standard delivery time is 2-3 business days for stock items. For tenders or large infrastructure projects, we can provide technical specifications and certification. Our sandbags meet professional quality standards and are suitable for use with geotextiles and other ground protection materials.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sandbags

What is the difference between jute and polypropylene sandbags?

Jute sandbags are biodegradable and ideal for temporary projects where environmental friendliness is a priority. They are strong enough for seasonal applications and break down naturally after use. Polypropylene sandbags are UV-stable, reusable, and suitable for long-term exposure to weather conditions.

They weigh 50 grams each and have a top seam with a bottom seam for added strength. For projects lasting longer than one season or with intense sun exposure, we recommend PP.

What is the capacity of the sandbags and how much do they weigh when filled?

Both sandbags measure 38x58 cm and have a 15-liter capacity. Filled with dry sand, they weigh approximately 20-25 kg, depending on the sand type and moisture content. The empty jute bags are lighter than the PP version (50 grams each). The drawstring closure allows for efficient closure and prevents sand loss during transport and installation. For flood barriers, we recommend filling the bags 80-90% full for optimal stackability and stability.

Are there tiered pricing available for large projects?

For professional projects, we offer competitive bulk pricing starting at 100 sandbags. Exact prices vary depending on the material chosen (jute or PP) and the quantity required. For tenders or infrastructure projects, we can prepare customized quotes, including technical specifications and material certifications. Contact us at info@dmcovering.be or call 052/222.400 for project-specific pricing and delivery times. We deliver to contractors in Belgium and the Netherlands within 2-3 business days.

Can sandbags be combined with geotextiles?

Yes, sandbags are often combined with geotextile for soil stabilization and erosion control projects. The geotextile acts as a separation layer and drainage, while the sandbags provide weight and stability. For water-retaining structures, a combination is often used where the geotextile protects the subsoil and the sandbags form the actual barrier. Our BENOR-certified geotextile 120-150 g/m² is suitable for these applications and can be ordered together with sandbags for integrated project solutions.

How long do jute sandbags last when used outdoors?

Jute sandbags are biodegradable and typically last 6-12 months outdoors, depending on weather conditions and humidity. This is sufficient for seasonal flood defenses or temporary ground reinforcement. For permanent applications or when a longer lifespan is required, we recommend UV-stable PP sandbags, which can last for several years and are reusable. For projects with specific sustainability requirements, we can advise on the most suitable material selection.
