Root cloth for professional garden projects

Professional weed control fabric and ground cover 90-100 g/m² for landscapers and contractors for artificial grass projects, gravel paths, paving, and borders. Anti-weed fabric with UV stabilization ≈800 kLy guarantees weed suppression for 10+ years without degradation from sunlight. Water permeability of 0.02 m/s ensures optimal drainage to the subsoil while permanently suppressing weed growth.

The range includes three weight categories: synthetic polypropylene 90 g/m² for permanent applications, premium jute 2000 g/m² for temporary planting projects, and biodegradable PLA/hemp ground cover 157 g/m² for ecological landscaping. Large rolls up to 5.25 x 100 m (525 m² per roll) minimize seams and speed up installation for professional garden projects.

Woven Root Cloth vs. Non-Woven Ground Cloth

Woven weed control fabric (tape fabric) is the standard choice for garden applications under gravel, paving stones, and artificial grass. Polypropylene tape fabric offers excellent tensile strength and UV resistance for long-term weed control. The green color edging facilitates overlap control during installation.

Non-woven ground cover (thermally bonded fleece) is used where additional filtering is required, such as in drainage and water management. For standard garden projects requiring weed control, woven root cloth is the most cost-effective choice. For civil engineering projects with drainage requirements, we recommend our BENOR-certified geotextile.

Root cloth under gravel, tiles and artificial grass

Weed control fabric under gravel and crushed stone prevents pebbles from mixing with the substrate and permanently suppresses weed growth. For gravel paths, we recommend 90 g/m² with at least a 10 cm overlap between strips. Use ground cover pegs every meter to secure the fabric before laying the gravel.
Root cloth under tiles and pavers prevents subsidence due to uneven pressure distribution and keeps the joints weed-free. For artificial grass installations, root cloth is essential as a barrier between the sand foundation and any root growth. UV stabilization guarantees no degradation if the artificial grass is damaged.

Biodegradable Ground Cover

For ecological garden projects and plantings, we offer biodegradable ground cover: jute 2000 g/m² (breaks down in 2-3 seasons) and PLA/hemp 157 g/m² (breaks down in 12-18 months). Bio-based ground cover is ideal for temporary weed control in plantings where a permanent barrier would hinder root development.

Jute ground cover is a 100% natural material that breaks down in the soil without residue. PLA/hemp bio-based ground cover offers higher tensile strength (3 kN/m) for more intensive applications. Both varieties are permeable and suitable for professional ecological garden projects.

Frequently Asked Questions about Root Cloth

Which weed control fabric is best for artificial grass?

For artificial grass projects, we recommend 90 g/m² polypropylene root barrier with UV stabilization of ≈800 kLy. Tensile strength of 600 N/5 cm provides sufficient resistance to root pressure and ground movement. Water permeability of 0.02 m/s ensures drainage of rainwater to the sand foundation without water retention.

Large rolls of 5.25 x 100 m (525 m² per roll) minimize seams in gardens and sports fields. UV stabilization prevents degradation during installation or damage to artificial turf.

What is the difference between synthetic and organic root cloth?

Synthetic polypropylene weed control fabric 90 g/m² is suitable for permanent weed control projects lasting 10+ years: artificial grass, paved surfaces, and gravel paths. UV stabilization ≈800 kLy, water permeability 0.02 m/s.

Biodegradable ground cover (jute 2000 g/m² or PLA/hemp 157 g/m²) is suitable for temporary projects lasting one to three seasons. Jute degrades in two to three seasons, making it suitable for planting projects. Biodegradable ground cover saves costs by eliminating the need for subsequent disposal.

Why choose professional root cloth instead of Gamma, Brico, or Action?

Root cloth from hardware stores like Gamma, Brico, Action, or Hornbach is often lightweight (50-70 g/m²) with limited UV stabilization (2-3 years). Professional root cloth 90-100 g/m² with UV stabilization ≈800 kLy lasts 10+ years, compared to budget versions that last 3-5 years. The extra cost is recouped through a longer lifespan and no reinstallation.

At DM Covering, you get professional quality with graduated pricing for large projects, technical specifications for clients, and expert advice. Gardeners and landscape contractors benefit from large rolls up to 525 m² (minimal seams), delivery time of 2-3 business days, and custom work upon request.

How long does weed control fabric last?

Professional weed control fabric 90-100 g/m² with UV stabilization ≈800 kLy has a lifespan of 10-15 years under paved surfaces, gravel, or artificial grass. Direct exposure to sunlight (uncovered) reduces the lifespan to 3-5 years. Organic jute ground cover is designed to degrade naturally after 1-2 seasons. The warranty is void if it comes into contact with chemicals (sulfur, chlorine, or iron derivatives). For project warranties, we specify the installation method in our technical documentation.

What is the difference between root cloth and geotextile?

Root cloth is specifically designed for garden applications: weed control under gravel, paving stones, artificial grass, and in borders. It focuses on UV resistance and light blocking. Geotextiles have broader applications in infrastructure: drainage, ground separation, stabilization in road construction, and civil engineering projects.

Geotextiles meet BENOR standards for tenders. For garden projects requiring weed control, choose root cloth. For infrastructure with drainage requirements, view our geotextile collection.
